The firmware for the Maxtor Shared Storage II Drive includes software licensed under the GNU General Public License (“GPL Software”). The MSS II will automatically restart after the update. Please make sure that there is no one using your Shared Storage Drive during the update process!

(16384.0 kb) This firmware update is solely for Maxtor Shared Storage II (MSS II) Network Storage Drives! Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, Mac OS 10.3.9 x, Windows XP Media Center Edition, and Windows Vista. The MSS II_v_3_1_28 firmware implements a fix for the extended daylight savings time, includes DLNA and UPnP logo certifications, and fixes a problem with the drive capacity being reported improperly through the web GUI and Simple View summary.

To update the Firmware from a Windows Client:

  1. Download and unzip the file mss_v_3_1_28.zip file to your Windows desktop. You should see three files called mss_v_3_1_28.bin, GNU General Public License.txt and LINUX MSS Linux Copyright Notice.txt.
  2. Double click on Maxtor EasyManage icon on your desktop.
  3. Once the MSS is located on the discovery screen, select it and click NEXT
  4. From the EasyManage Main Menu, select Drive Management
  5. Select Advanced Settings
  6. This will open up your default web browser. If you have applied a password to the Shared Storage Drive it will prompt you to enter it at this time.
  7. After entering your password select ADVANCED SETTINGS > SYSTEM MAINTENANCE > SYSTEM UPDATE.
  8. Click Next.
  9. After clicking next you will have to browse for the Software Update file. Click on the Browse button.
  10. Select the mss_v_3_1_28.bin file from the location it was saved to (e.g., the Windows Desktop). Click Open.
  11. Click Update, At this point the firmware will load to your Shared Storage Drive. The update process takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. During this time, the Shared Storage Drive will be inaccessible to users.
  12. Once the update is finished you will get a confirmation screen letting you know that your Shared Storage Drive has been updated successfully. Click DONE.

To update the Firmware from a Macintosh Client:

  1. Download and extract the file mss_v_3_1_28.zip file to your Mac desktop. You should see three files called mss_v_3_1_28.bin, GNU General Public License.txt and LINUX MSS Linux Copyright Notice.txt.
  2. Double click on EasyManage icon on your desktop. If prompted, type in your user Name and Password to authenticate.
  3. Once the MSS is located on the EasyManage screen, select it and click the Select Drive button.
  4. Click on the Settings button.
  5. From the EasyManage – Settings screen, click on the Advanced tab.
  6. Click on the Shared Storage Administration button. This will open up your default web browser. If you have applied a password to the Shared Storage Drive you will be prompted to enter it at this time.
  7. After entering your password select ADVANCED SETTINGS > SYSTEM MAINTENANCE > SYSTEM UPDATE.
  8. Click Next.
  9. After clicking next you will have to browse for the Software Update file. Click on the Choose File button.
  10. Select the mss_v_3_1_28.bin file from the location it was saved to (e.g., your Mac Desktop). Click Open.
  11. Click Update. At this point the firmware will load to your Shared Storage Drive. The update process takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. During this time, the Shared Storage Drive will be inaccessible to users.

To verify that the system has been updated look at the firmware revision in the upper left hand corner of the Web UI. It should read version 3.1.28.
